FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

UAE Business Setup:
Your Questions Answered

  • There are three main routes: Mainland (licensed by the economic department of each emirate), Free Zone (licensed by the free zone authority) and Offshore (for international business and holding structures). The right choice depends on where you plan to trade, your business activity, visa needs and budget.
  • Yes, in most cases. Free zone companies allow 100% foreign ownership, and most mainland commercial and industrial activities now allow 100% foreign ownership too. A limited number of strategic activities still have ownership conditions, and we will confirm this for your activity.
  • Timelines vary by jurisdiction, business activity and any external approvals required. Once your documents are complete, many free zone licenses can be issued quickly, while mainland setups with additional approvals can take longer. We give you a realistic timeline before you start.
  • Mainland companies generally need a registered office space with a tenancy contract. Most free zones offer flexi-desk or shared office options, and offshore companies do not require a physical office in the UAE.
  • Mainland and free zone companies can sponsor residence visas for investors, partners and employees. The number of visas depends on your license package and office space. Offshore companies cannot sponsor UAE residence visas.
  • Corporate Tax registration is required for UAE businesses, including free zone companies. VAT registration is mandatory once taxable supplies exceed AED 375,000 in 12 months, and voluntary from AED 187,500. We help you with both registrations.
  • Yes. Once your license is issued, we guide you through the bank account application and help you prepare the documents banks ask for. Final approval is always at the bank's discretion.
  • Typically a passport copy, passport-size photo, and a visa or entry stamp (or Emirates ID if you are a UAE resident). If a company is a shareholder, attested corporate documents are also needed. The exact list depends on the jurisdiction and activity, and we share a checklist before you begin.
  • The cost depends on the jurisdiction, business activity, license type, number of visas, office requirements and any extra approvals. Share your requirements with us and we will give you a clear setup cost estimate.
  • Yes. Activities can usually be added or amended after your license is issued, subject to approval from the licensing authority and the applicable fees.
  • A free zone company is registered in one of the UAE's designated free zones and is regulated by that free zone's own authority. It allows 100% foreign ownership and is a popular choice for startups, consultants, traders and international businesses.
  • Key benefits include 100% foreign ownership, full repatriation of capital and profits, a simplified registration process, flexi-desk and shared office options, and packages that include residence visas.
  • Free zone companies mainly operate within their free zone and internationally. To trade directly with mainland customers you may need a mainland distributor, a mainland branch or an additional permit, depending on the emirate and activity. We will advise the right option for your plan.
  • Consider your business activity, the number of visas you need, preferred location, office requirements, budget and how banks view the free zone. We compare options side by side so you can choose with confidence.
  • Many free zones allow you to combine several related activities on a single license. The number and combination allowed varies between free zones and packages.
  • Free zone companies are within the UAE Corporate Tax regime and must register. A Qualifying Free Zone Person may benefit from a 0% rate on qualifying income if all conditions are met; other income is taxed at the standard rate.
  • Visa allocation depends on your license package and office space. Flexi-desk packages usually include a limited number of visas, and larger offices allow more.
  • Many free zones allow online registration, so you can start the process from outside the UAE. You will need to be in the UAE for visa steps such as the medical test and biometrics.
  • Free zone licenses are renewed every year. Your office or flexi-desk lease and any visas must also be kept valid.
  • We assist with setups in IFZA, Meydan, RAKEZ, DMCC, SHAMS, SPC, DAFZA, Hamriyah, DIFC, Ajman Free Zone and Umm Al Quwain FTZ, among others.
  • A mainland company is licensed by the economic department of an emirate, such as Dubai's Department of Economy and Tourism. It can trade directly with customers anywhere in the UAE.
  • Mainland companies can trade across the UAE without restriction, work directly with government and private sector clients, choose their office location freely and sponsor visas based on office size.
  • Yes, for most commercial and industrial activities. A small number of strategic activities still have ownership conditions, which we check for your chosen activity.
  • Most activities with 100% foreign ownership no longer need a local sponsor. Some professional licenses may still need a local service agent, depending on the emirate and activity.
  • Yes. A mainland company generally needs a registered office with a tenancy contract (Ejari in Dubai). The office size also affects how many visas you can apply for.
  • The usual steps are choosing your activity and legal form, trade name reservation, initial approval, signing the Memorandum of Association, securing an office lease and issuing the trade license.
  • Common options include a Limited Liability Company (LLC), sole establishment, civil company, and a branch of a foreign or UAE company.
  • Mainland companies can trade anywhere in the UAE and need a physical office. Free zone companies offer flexible office options and simpler setup, but mainly trade within the free zone and internationally.
  • Yes. Mainland companies can take part in government tenders, subject to the registration requirements of each government entity.
  • We assist with mainland company formation in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah and Umm Al Quwain.
